THE FOUNDATION’S SIGNATURE PROGRAM

Takitani Legacy Scholarship Program

The Takitani Legacy Scholarship Program carries forward the legacy of Mamoru and Aiko Takitani, founders of Hawaiian Host, who established the Foundation as a way to give back to the people of Hawaiʻi through the gift of education. Dedicated to helping Hawaiʻi students achieve their educational and career goals, the program recognizes outstanding graduating seniors from qualifying high schools statewide who embody hard work, academic achievement, excellence, financial need, and commitment to community service.

OUR GRANTS PROGRAM

Alongside its scholarships, the Foundation funds Hawai‘i organizations.

Grants support work in education, healthcare, culture and youth development — from hospital training programs to college-access initiatives to the arts.

The Mamoru and Aiko Takitani Foundation is committed to creating opportunities for Hawaiʻi’s youth through scholarships, education, and community-based programs. Inspired by the Takitanis’ legacy of giving back, we support young people across the islands as they learn, grow, and pursue their futures.

Grants are made by invitation only. Students and families seeking support should go to Scholarships.

OUR LEGACY

From a station wagon in Kaimukī to a foundation for the future.

Mamoru and Aiko Takitani married in 1936 in Wailuku, Maui, and later relocated to Honolulu, where Mamoru founded Hawaiian Host in 1960 — selling chocolate-covered macadamia nuts out of the back of his station wagon. The business grew into one of Hawai‘i’s most iconic brands, with operations reaching Los Angeles, Brazil, and Japan.

With no children of their own, the Takitanis looked for a way to invest in Hawai‘i’s future generations. In 1993, they established the Mamoru and Aiko Takitani Foundation to thank the community that had supported them from the beginning — and to give Hawai‘i students the gift of education, free of financial barriers.

“The Takitanis knew hard work, innovation and commitment to excellence were key factors in their success — and wanted to recognize those same qualities in Hawai‘i’s outstanding students.”
— Michael W. Perry, Chair, Takitani Foundation
